Fully self-contained unit with simple convenient adjustments for establishing the atomic nature of electricity. The cell, easily demountable to show the construction and allow measurement of its dimensions, is mounted on the case which carries the power unit. A microscope is screwed into the side of the cell and pre-focused at its central point. There is a minute hole in the top electrode of the cell above this point, communicating with a small resevoir into which the charged oil drops are blown and which may be released into the cell in small batches by raising a simple ball valve. A window in the side of the cell at about 120deg to the microscope position allows light to be projected in from a simple optical system mounted in a ferrous tube resting on magnets. The light system can thus be moved around conveniently to an optimum position for illumination of the oil drops, whilst providing sufficient background light with which to observe the reference graticule. The power unit provides 1-600V for the cell electrodes and also low voltage for illuminating the lamp. High value safety resistors are incorporated in the connections to the cell to prevent any hazardous contacts, and double-pole mains switching is employed for complete isolation. Neon tube mains-on indication is used and the tubular fuse mounted on the panel is to Nuffield recommendations. A clearly marked switch with a neutral central position changes the cell polarity to reverse the electric field. The case is mounted on levelling feet. Supplied ready for use on 220/240V mains. Complete with an atomiser, a supply of suitable oil and a graticule calibrator.
